The mice were fed a special fat rich, high-sugar diet for 6 weeks. All had a 27% increase in blubber.

Some were then switched to a low calorie diet. Of those, one group was given calcium additions (calcium carbonate like Tums) and others were fed “medium” and “high” amounts of low-fat dry milk. Body fat storage was noticeably reduced by all 3 high-calcium diets, say the authors. Mice getting their calcium through additions had a 42% decrease in fat. Those given calcium additions had excellent results, when mixed with the restricted-calorie diet.

Mice getting their calcium thru additions had a 42% drop off in body fat, while mice eating without supplements had an 8% blubber loss. Mice on the “medium-dairy” diet had a 60% decrease in blubber, while those on the “high-dairy” diet lost 69% body fat. Researchers also found minute increases in thermogenesis, the body’s core temperature, which then enhances the effects of calcium gained through diet instead of calcium in supplement form, announces Zemel.

“Calcium is no silver bullet. What the study says is that .. Higher-calcium diets favour burning instead of piling up fat. “Many people who stick to a calorie-reduced diet don’t lose pounds as fast as they believe that they should. That’s because they activate metabolic protection .. In reality they are shooting themselves in the foot, because they subject themselves to more empty-calorie sources. They’d be much better off if they’d substitute high-fat dairy goods with low-fat dairy,” asserts Zemel.

While nonfat dry milk was used in this report, few folks buy that product, claims Meyers. “Also, there are folks who are lactose-sensitive who can’t consume dairy foods.
